| Kumiai indian juncus basketry Since ancient times, native people of the Californias have created finely woven coil baskets as winnowing and parching trays, storage containers and even for carrying water. Kumiai artisans gather juncus rushes from arroyos when the moon is full, just as their mothers and grandmothers taught them, carefully removing only a few leaves from each plant to ensure a sustainable harvest. Attractive designs are achieved by stitching in contrasting colors of juncus, either brown (from the leaf base) or black derived from oak bark, soot and minerals. This intricate weaving requires great skill and patience, with an average plate sized tray taking over a month to complete.
