PALM BROOMS Paipai artisans make these lovely brooms from the leaf of the native California Fan Palm (Washingtonia filifera). The artisans trim only a few of the lower leaves from each palm, fashioning them into rope, thatched roofs and brooms. The fruit or taquito of the palm is also a traditional food for desert peoples. This palm naturally occurs along the eastern edge of the sierras of Southern California and Baja California, growing abundantly in remote canyons where the mountain streams run into the desert.
