Paipai Palm and Pine Needle Basketry

Native american artists are known for integrating natural materials and forms into their artwork. Paipai artisans have learned to use the fibers from native palm leaves, pine needles and occasionally juncus rush leaves to create intricately coiled baskets with striking patterns. The style and techniques used reflect the influence of traditional California and Southwestern Indian cultures. And these exquisite baskets are also environmentally friendly: the gathering of materials does not damage trees since only dry or dropped leaves are used.
